if I buy something, how am I supporting ocean conservation?

a portion of all proceeds is donated to Project Hiu, an Indonesian-based initiative that aims to provide an alternative income to shark fishermen in one of the world’s largest shark fisheries. founded by Madison Stewart, Project Hiu (‘Hiu’ being the Indonesian word for ‘Shark’) hires the fishing boats and their crew in order to offer a different role and salary through tourism.

Project Hiu is founded on the recognition that the very solution to saving sharks, lay with the men raised to kill them.

why is conserving the ocean important?

there’s a reason earth is considered to be a ‘blue planet’. the oceans cover nearly 75% of our planet and act as a lifeline to all living things that rely on it. for centuries, humans have used this vast body of water for necessities such as food and travel. along with these well-known contributions, the oceans play an important role in both the regulation of climate and the production of the oxygen we breathe. however, in recent times, there are many problems increasing at an exponential rate that this marine environment faces: global warming, trash pollution, overfishing, coral reef destruction … the list goes on and on.

how can I help?

understanding just how massive the ocean is and how many problems it faces can be daunting and it can begin to seem like there is simply nothing we can do about it. but, good news! there are so many simple steps you can take on a personal level to help the ocean. bring your reusable bag to the grocery store, ride your bike to the store, use reusable straws and bring your own cup to restaurants. other good ideas include organizing a small (or community-wide) beach or natural park cleanup to pick up trash pollution in our own communities. contact local politicians about important matters such as shark finning or ethical fishing practices. it is all completely doable and something that can be made routine. one million starts with one.
